Saved by Geno : The New York Jets, NFL Franchise or TV Series?

by Chris Sexton

The Jets. J-e-t-s Jets. We spell our team name not because of the ease of it all, but to force the fact that we are jet fans and we may not change that. Like a kid trying to remember what year Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, the quick and constant repetition of the "J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!" chant brainwashes us in our undying fandom. When Double Down Trent, sent out the blog signal ( Like the bat signal, but instead of a bat, its a silhouette of a guy in flannel PJ's drinking mountain dew over a laptop) to me for my opinion on the Gang Green's draft, i couldn't resist the chance to let my feelings on the matter be heard.

I wrote a nice 450 word response to the jets circus, it was heartfelt, educational, had some great analogies and I was all set to email it over to the editors Monday morning then, Tebow got waived. So I started over.

Now, Tebow being waived shouldn't effect how i view the draft that took place two days earlier. But it without question does. I'm sick of the jokes that Eli Manning has two rings and Rex Ryan has 3 rings.

I love Tebow, when he was in Florida i watched him at every opportunity and his season in Denver was must-see reality TV, but I would really love him somewhere else. The power of Tebow, cant be contained, ESPN will not let it.

He has a charisma that is enchanting, a vibe that is enthralling, a air about him that is born to lead. However, cutting Tebow is the first step in moving forward, packing up the circus (3 rings, get it?) and becoming a football team not a headline, a league-wide punch line.

I will miss you Timothy Moses Tebow.

The Jets quarterback situation last year reminded me a lot about Saved by the Bell. Now stay with me here, I often make bad analogies but this one works. Mark Sanchez is A.C. Slater. Star athlete, from southern California with Mexican heritage. But that's not what is mentioned first, they mention how damn handsome he is. The problem with Slater is (outside of sitting in chairs backwards), as good as he is, (and he will have a long career in this industry), he is not the star that can carry your show. I'm sorry Mario. But that's Sanchez, handsome and just not talented enough to carry the load of a show on his own.

Now onto Timothy "Cain & Abel" Tebow, he is Screech. Whenever he is on screen he has your full attention. He has as devout fan base, (nerds for screech, religious folk for Tebow), that will support him through all his wares. He may not be talented like Mario Lopez, but for a great episode of The Bell, Screech needs to get his touches. But most of the time he is a distraction from what you really care about and this of course is...ZACK MORRIS!

Last year the Jets were a team without a Zack Morris. No team without a Zack Morris has ever won the Super Bowl. Now leadership from Rex Belding has been a little rocky as it is, but I believe that he has what it takes as a principal (coach) to get the most out of his Zack Morris.

Now this was supposed to be a quick take on the Jets draft. I spent 85% of the time just talking about the Jets circus, Tim "Mary Magdalene Tebow" and Mark Sanchez.

Why you ask, because that's how you cover the Jets - all headlines substance.

Lets quickly get into the Jets draft, although Coulter dropped a bomb of piece on round one, a fantastic read in hindsight, the Jets came away with the consensus number one defensive back and the best defensive player on the best defensive team in college football. He has some big shoes to fill as defensive back on the Jets and I think he should take that literally. Go buy a pair of the NIKE Zoom Revis trainers, wear number 24 and just troll the media. He will be a good weak-side fit to Cromartie and i think the Jets defense continues its success under Rex.

Sheldon Richardson, is one big man.  With that said, why is it when the Jets draft an extra defensive linemen, they are being redundant, but if the Giants do it they are gaining depth?

The Jets need one-on-one pass rushers, because they cant do it all from blitz packages. Lets hope my 2nd favorite Sheldon helps them here. (My First being Sheldon Cooper, of course)

Then the Jets drafted 3 straight offensive lineman. traded for a Running back (the vastly underrated Chris Ivory), and drafted a full back named T-Bo. Good offensive line, strong running game, tough defense. This was the Jets blueprint that Miss Bliss's Classroom (Eric Mangini) put together in the pilot season of what became "Saved By The Bell " that, with the guidance of Mr. Rex Belding made it to two straight AFC championships.

Now onto the question that will define the Jets going forward. The 39th pick of the draft. Is Geno Smith, the Jets Zack Morris?

Stay tuned for Next Season.

We asked our readers for their take of the Jets draft, specifically their QB situation. Here's a few of their responses.

"IN.GENO.WE.TRUST. Geno starting week 1, and though I'm still a Sanchez believer I bet they release him. I don't think he's worthless. He will end up somewhere."

"Despise the Geno pick. Only consolation is that it wasn't day one. Team is gonna suck next year anyways, should have ridden out Sanchez and his shitty contract and drafted a QB (likely gonna be a better class) next year. Too many holes to fill across the roster (OL, LB, WR, RB) to make that pick. Of course, I obviously don't know shit."

"Jets are an awful franchise with 6 qbs (editors note, its now 5 but this was instant reaction to the pick). "

"I think someone makes a play for Sanchez. Probably not this season because of his dumbass contract, but jets are definitely going to shop him. Can't cut him, he's owed like 12 million this year.I bet someone like Jacksonville makes a play and if you get a 4th round pick in exchange for Sanchez you should be thrilled as a the jets. Most likely it will be 5th or 6th round pick though."

"I think their management is having a competition to see who can make the dumbest move. You know one guy says "let's do this really dumb thing." While the guy next to him says "You think that's dumb, check out this new level of stupid." Or maybe they're trying to remove the word stupid from the dictionary altogether and replace it with the phrase "jetting"."

"Hate the Geno pick, would have rather had lacy. And I have no idea who starts week 1. I figured they would do one more awful year with sanchez than draft McCarron next year. I think Sanchez will be a decent backup somewhere but just doesn't have that X factor that most starters have. Can't say I'm surprised with the Geno pick though since we had 2 smart picks in round 1.
